Lesotho,(/lɪˈsuːtuː/ ⓘ lih-SOO-too,Sotho pronunciation:[lɪˈsʊːtʰʊofficially the Kingdom of Lesothoand formerly known as Basutoland, is an landlocked countryin Southern Africa. Entirely surrounded by South Africa, it is the largest of only three sovereign enclavesin the world, the others being San Marinoand Vatican City, which are surrounded by Italy.
Lesotho is situated in the Maloti Mountains and contains the highest peak in Southern Africa.
It has an area of over 30,000 km2(11,600mi2) and has a population of about 2.3 million. Its capitaland largest city is Maseru.
Lesotho was formed in 1824 by King Moshoeshoe I. Continuous encroachments by Dutch settlers made the King enter into an agreement with the United Kingdom to become a protectoratein 1868 and, in 1884, a crown colony. It achieved independencein 1966, and was subsequently ruled by the Basotho National Party(BNP) for two decades. Its constitutional government was restored in 1993 after seven years of military rule.
King Moshoeshoe IIwas exiled in 1990 but returned in 1992 and was reinstated in 1995. One year later, Moshoeshoe II died and his son Letsie IIItook the throne, which he still holds.
The Sotho ethnic group(also known as Basotho), from which the country derives its name, comprises 99.7% of the country's current population, making it one of the most ethnically homogeneousin the world. Their native language, Sesotho, is an official language along with English, IsiXhosa, and SiPhuthi.
Lesotho is considered a lower middle income countrywith significant socioeconomic challenges, but also one of the highest rates of literacyin Africa (81% as of 2021). Lesotho is a member of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, and

Un programma denso e articolato, eseguito in un contesto cosplay, che accosta brani del grande repertorio classico europeo – il Preludio Pas sur la neige di Claude Debussy, il Terzo movimento della Sonata op. 109 di L. V. Beethoven e il Notturno in Do diesis minore di Frédéric Chopin – a celebri pagine della musica contemporanea giapponese di Joe Hisaishi e Shiro Sagisu.
Nel richiamare la connessione tra la tradizione musicale classica europea e le creazioni asiatiche contemporanee, Rebecca Guerra propone un’ulteriore chiave di lettura del concerto, racchiusa nel sottotitolo «Ghibli vs Evangelion».
Saranno infatti eseguite musiche composte per i film dello Studio Ghibli da Joe Hisaishi: Ashitaka e San (Principessa Mononoke), Memories (Il ragazzo e l’airone), Fantasia di Nausicaä (Nausicaä della Valle del Vento), Merry-Go-Round(Il Castello errante di Howl), One Summer’s Day (La città incantata), Confessions in the Moonlight (Il castello nel cielo) e Mononoke (Principessa Mononoke).
A questi si alterneranno i brani di Shiro Sagisu tratti dalla saga di Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji I, Rei I, Thanatos, Rei II e il Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra “Shinji” (versione per due pianoforti).
Il concerto, nello stile del Maestro Guerra, si configura non solo come un omaggio celebrativo, ma come un vero e proprio dialogo estetico tra linguaggi musicali e immaginari differenti, nei quali la musica colta europea del XIX e XX secolo trova sorprendenti risonanze nelle colonne sonore della cultura audiovisiva giapponese contemporanea.
Le pagine di Debussy, Beethoven e Chopin non rappresentano semplicemente un contrappunto “classico” al repertorio cinematografico, ma costituiscono una matrice espressiva che riaffiora, trasformata, nelle scritture di Joe Hisaishi e Shiro Sagisu.
Nel confronto tra Studio Ghibli ed Evangelion emerge inoltre una dicotomia poetica: da un lato l’universo di Hisaishi, legato a una dimensione naturalistica, contemplativa e umanista; dall’altro la musica di Sagisu, che traduce in suono il conflitto interiore, la frammentazione dell’identità e la tensione apocalittica propria della saga di Neon Genesis Evangelion.
In questo senso, il sottotitolo «Ghibli vs Evangelion» non va inteso come opposizione, ma come chiave interpretativa: due visioni del mondo che si fronteggiano e si completano, entrambe debitrici, in modo diretto o indiretto, della tradizione musicale occidentale.
L’elemento performativo del cosplay contribuisce infine ad ampliare il perimetro del concerto, trasformandolo in un’esperienza immersiva in cui musica, immaginario visivo e memoria collettiva dialogano con il pubblico, superando i confini convenzionali del recital pianistico.
The Moshoeshoe Walk is an annual three-day, 116-kilometer (approximately 72-mile) journey in Lesotho that retraces King Moshoeshoe I's 1824 migration from Menkhoaneng to Thaba-Bosiu. The hike serves as a historical, cultural, and endurance event that honors the founder of the Basotho nation, covering roughly 30–40 km per day. This walk is an annual event that has attracted international hikers and tourists. Along the journey, participants don’t only get the breeze of fresh water from the eye catching mountains of Lesotho but a rich cultural heritage of Lesotho.
Key Details of the Retraced Journey
Significance:The walk symbolizes the historical journey of the Basotho people to find refuge during the tumultuous Lifaqane wars.
Route:The walk begins in Menkhoaneng in the Leribe District and concludes at the Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village, passing through areas like Thaba Phatsoa and Malimong.
The Destination:Thaba-Bosiu ("Mountain at Night") is considered the birthplace of the Basotho nation, acting as a natural fortress selected by Moshoeshoe I for its strategic defensive advantages.
Annual Event: The walk often coincides with the commemoration of King Moshoeshoe's legacy in March, attracting participants who walk in the footsteps of their ancestors.
2025 Schedule: The 2025 event was planned for early March, with participants traveling from Maseru to begin the journey from Menkhoaneng, ending with a ceremony at Thaba-Bosiu.
The event serves as a living history lesson, highlighting the strategic foresight of the King in creating a nation.
